White Gold Pendants

By Taylor Sanders

Over the years people have gone back and forth with various jewelry styles. Maybe there were a few years when yellow gold was in; platinum was the popular fad, or silver just popped onto the seen. However, in today's market it's the white gold pendants that are getting all of the attention.

One thing you will want to be sure of is that you buy your white gold pendants from an accredited jeweler, since it can be hard to tell the difference between white gold and silver visually, but there is a drastic difference in price, since white gold is considerably worth more than silver.

The primary difference between white gold and yellow gold is the alloys that are mixed with the 18 karat gold. All 18 karat gold, whether yellow, white or rose, is 75% pure gold, but yellow gold is mixed with alloy metals such as copper and zinc, where white gold is mixed with silver and palladium. White gold is often coated with rhodium, which is similar to platinum, as far as properties go.

These are just a few of the reasons why white gold is a more expensive than yellow gold. Since the rhodium is present, the pendants are much stronger and durable, which could last a lifetime. It's why people actually choose 18 karat gold. However, if you're looking for white or yellow engagement rings this is evident, but in white gold pendants, dress jewelry and earrings may go with a 9 to 14 karat for a cheaper price.

Obviously with this beautiful gift, you want to have it shiny and white. In order to do this the rhodium must be re-plated every year to year and a half. If it doesn't have a rhodium finish you'll notice a gray appearance. Plus it will be more prone to damage then without it. However, keeping up with the maintenance will have the possibility of breaking greatly reduced.

Because white gold is cheaper than platinum, white gold is often chosen for jewelry, since it looks very similar and appears more expensive than yellow gold. Of course, it is not that more expensive than yellow gold, so many people prefer white gold pendants over yellow gold pendants.

Keep a close eye on the stones as well. When you have white gold pendants you will enjoy the fact that they are highlighted. The quality of reflection is one of purity and allows others to focus in on its appeal. If you own yellow gold, you understand that it just doesn't have the same effect. It may now, but once you've owned these white gold pendants you'll rethink your position.

White gold pendants are a choice that reflects a visual impressiveness and a similarity to the high priced platinum. For a richness that yellow gold can't portray, white gold pendants offer style and sophistication, with a slightly higher price, but still much less than platinum pendants would cost.
