Dustin Nippert laid out his argument for keeping the No. five spot in the Rangers' starting rotation of pitchers in the Rangers' 5-two win versus Toronto in the first portion of Tuesday's double header. Next in line, Brandon McCarthy, coming back for his 1st appearance since leaving the active roster in June for the DL.
Nippert displayed far superior control than in his previous outing last week in Newborn York. In the Bronx, he allowed 11 base runners (four hits, 7 bases on balls) and got 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to obtain his fifth victory of the season and 3rd as a starter. Nippert gave up 5 hits, and walked merely one. He reduced his ERA as a starting pitcher to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert's third quality start in his previous 5 games.
Nippert said there seriously wasn't a lot distinction concerning how he threw last week and on Tuesday: "Just able to pitch strikes. In Yankee Stadium, I suppose I pitched one slider for a strike. The larger dilemma I found myself in, I tried harder to get beyond it. I was just going the wrong way. I continued walking men, trying to create that flawless pitch.
"Yesterday, I was able to throw it in front in the count, behind in the count. Keep 'em off my fastball."
Insisted manager Ron Washington: "I do not believe he was pitching too hard. He was equalizing with his change-up and his moving pitches. Elevated his fastball."
Washington and Nippert both stated Nippert was not pitching to keep his position in the pitching rotation. Furthermore Nippert claimed he'll gladly start or come in from the bullpen. Because the Rangers are in playoff contention, each player's role augments in importance.
"I really want to lend a hand to this franchise," he said. "It's great for us that we possess further arms now. Whoever's effective you may go with.
