Beckett and Garza Face Off in Baseball

The Sox ace has struggled throughout his latest three starts, going 0-1 with a 9.82 earned run average, giving up 10 home runs. However the Sox are 2-1 in those games.

In his last outing, August 28th vs the Blue Jays at home, Beckett wasn't involved in the outcome as he gave up five runs on five hits and five bases on balls, with 9 strikeouts thrown in 5.0 innings.

All 5 runs came on home runs. Beckett, who allowed only eighteen homers in 2008, allowed 12 in August.

Beckett most recently opposed the Rays May 10th at Fenway, letting up 3 runs on six hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts thrown in 6 IP, however did not acquire a decision in the Sox' 4-3 win.

In his most recent game at Tropicana Field, April 30th, he gave up seven runs in 4.2 innings. In five career starts at the Trop, Beckett maintains a record of 1-3 with a 3.58 ERA.

Garza is in a 6-game run without a win, and has not earned a win at home in his most recent 5 starts. His last win was over a month ago in Toronto, defeating Roy Halladay. He has just one victory in his latest 10 outings.

He leads the AL with a .233 opponents' average, although has received the worst run support in the AL at 3.73 runs per 9 innings. Tampa Bay has scored a sum of 18 runs during his nine defeats.

He has surrendered three earned runs or less in 19 of his last 26 games this season, together with 17 of his last 22.

This is Garza's 11th all-time appearance versus the Sox and fifth this year. He has a lifetime record of 5-1 with a 2.93 earned run average, (twenty earned runs 61.1 IP.

This year he is 2-0 with a 1.88 earned run average vs the Red Sox. His most recent start against the Red Sox was August 4th in Tampa Bay. He did not obtain a decision, as the Rays won, 4-2 in thirteen innings.
